Our Builder

Ethos Homes – Guy and Pete are building our house. Guy has owned and operated Character Homes in the Canterbury region for many years and brings his eye for detail and expertise on quality construction methods. Pete worked in Germany for a few years where he built PassivHaus homes and saw the benefits first hand. As a team they are providing us with a wrap-around service of project management, building work and advice. Having a team of guys dedicated to this job is proving very beneficial to a successful outcome, especially as they are absolutely “drinking the Kool-Aid” and totally buy into the PassivHaus approach. Pete spends a lot of time working with our architectural designer and indecently planning every little stage and minutiae of the build so that things run smoothly and to plan onsite. In the background Guy has established relationships with quality sub-trades which means that they turn up on time and don’t hold up the job – this aspect of a PassivHaus build should not be underestimated as the panellised approach really does enable and make use of a “just in time” approach to building and if sub-trades do not comply with the timeline, then all those time advantages gained by using panels are lost. In 2017 there were four certified passive houses built in Christchurch, and Ethos built two of them – ours and another one that made Passive House Plus status.

Professional Advice

ThecaGlenn Murdoch’s Christchurch based passive house consultancy that also produces the insulated wall panels (previously under the name Vicus) that we will use in our build. Glenn is an architectural designer and able to run designs through the PHPP model. Glenn and Theca have suggested and made small modifications to our design to meet our requests and to optimise Passive House compliance. Glenn has provided us with a huge amount of information and assistance in achieving what we are looking for, and is ever mindful of meeting an appropriate budget! Glenn is running our pre-build project management.

MCD Architecture – Marc Coulthard is based in Christchurch and nailed the design and layout of our ideal house at the first attempt! He really listens to what you want and don’t want and doesn’t impose his views on you. He also (inadvertently) gave us a design that will work well as a passive house.

Engco – our foundations and superstructure need structural engineering design and sign off. Andy Lind and Conor Gleeson at Engco (The Engineering Company) are doing that for us for the superstructure and garage foundations.

Golder Associates – a geotechnical ground assessment is mandatory for building in our part of town. Golder drilled boreholes and ran this assessment and advised on the nature of foundations and ground improvements to meet the land characteristics.

eHaus – NZ based consultancy who we initially spoke to when we first started on the Passive House journey. eHaus ran our first design through the PHPP model which gave us reassurance that we could achieve Passive House status without changing much.

Sustainable Engineering – NZ based consultancy run by Jason Quinn. Jason is the guy who reviewed our data and passed our house as a Certified Passive House.

Detail by Davinia Sutton – Davinia provided design services for our kitchen and then coordinated and managed the suppliers and construction/installation.

OuterSpace – our amazing garden design and landscaping work was carried out by Ben and Simon of OuterSpace and designed by Jordan Hampson.

Materials

Theca pre-constructed, pre-insulated wall panels made in a factory and delivered to site for jigsaw style assembly – here is a factsheet

NK Windows – Martin and his team supplied and installed our triple glazed windows and uPVC frames. Manufactured and assembled in Christchurch and shipping and installing throughout NZ. We have been very impressed by the knowledge and attention to detail provided by Martin and his team.

Sub-Contractors

TTT Products – Cliff and his team provided design, engineering and construction of our ground improvement solution. We used the ground densification method using NZ grown timber piles. Note that ground improvement is not a requirement for PassivHaus and we only had to do it due to the ground stability and seismic nature of the city we live in.

Base Construction – Skill and precision resulting in a beautiful concrete slab foundation that we have polished. These guys not only work super hard but really know their stuff and achieved a perfectly level slab.

Element Roofing and Roofline – Roofline supplied the corrugated iron roof and Brock at Element Roofing installed it. Once again, skill and expertise on show and a quality product.

Terranova Tiling – Camillo Schulz and his team provided expert tiling for our bathrooms and kitchen.

Elite Plumbing

Concrete Brothers – installed our aggregate driveway.

Dyer Decorating – Mark and Logan and their team carried out all interior and exterior paintwork, and took immense care to hang our handprinted wallpaper with expert precision.

Lyall Park – Mark Birdling and his incredible team built and installed our kitchen, using Mercer stainless benches and Artisan Stone limestone bench.

Johnson and Couzins – supplied and installed the louvertec pergola in our garden.
